So the legend goes, turn of the last century media baron, William Randolph Hearst challenged a reporter to trap the "last" wild California Grizzly. The challenge was accepted and fulfilled. Monarch the Grizzly spent his last days in Bear enclosure in Golden Gate Park and succumbed to the Pioneer Spirit in 1911. His infamy lives on as model bear for our Golden State flag.
