This collection of paintings is for me akin to b-sides of singles, earnest in effort and interest. Recordings of various explorations, type based sign painting related depictions, collage, closed eye painting, and color relationship experiments. When I’m working on non-representational painting I let the work itself be the general guide, often continuing to work on the paintings until they tell me they are done. I love painting that is about paint, and the act of, letting the surface plane inform decisions as I continue to engage with the media. There’s a constant negotiation for my practice between drawing from life, and letting some of those impressions repeat or influence the way I make paintings that are not of real things. Some efforts are of the natural or lived world, and in my experience these channels of activity need not be in conflict with one another, but rather become a part of an external and internal vocabulary and conversation with the lived environment.
